Pierre CASTAGNEZ (1898-1951) : Thies, Senegal. Big ink wash tint. Signed 'Pierre Castagnez' lower left, situated 'Thies' and dated 'août 44' (August (19)44). Newly framed under glass with stained zebrano veneer wood frame.

Pierre CASTAGNEZ (1898-1951):
He was born in Castillones the 1st June 1898 where is father was a teacher. The day of his 17th anniversary, the 1st June of 1915, he enlisted in the army. He participated to the battles of Verdun and of Le Chemin des Dames. Three times buried alive, many times wounded and gassed, he ended the war with the War Cross with palms, the Military Medal and received after the Legion d'honneur as a simple soldier.
He followed lessons at the School of Fine Arts and then leaved for Senegal in Africa at the end of the year 1919.
Agent and then general agent of many trading counters, he left the trading carreer for the administration to be able to have time to practice his art.
He leaved many years in Bamako (Mali, ex Soudan Français), and then in Konakry (Guinée Française), before to become teacher at the Van Vallenhoven College in Dakar.
He spent all his holidays travelling inside the Afrique Occidentale Française. So he was, in 1941, the first painter to discover and to make famous the city of Tombouctou.
Member of the Société des Amis des Arts de Dakar, they have a yearly exhibition, Pierre Castagnez is one of the first members, il will become later its president after Roger NIVELT (1899-1962).
He died in Dakar at 53 years old in June 1951.
