André SORNAY (1902-2000) André SORNAY (1902-2000):
French decorator and furniture maker, born Lyons.
Studied Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Lyons.
Abandoning the historicist and ancient styles produced in the family workshop, he designed furniture from 1919 in simple, innovative, and Cubist forms inspired by the works of friends Francis JOURDAIN and Pierre CHAREAU and other avant-garde decorators. From 1925, when he opened a factory in Villeurbanne, he decorated numerous apartments in Paris in Lyons, offices, houses, and libraries. 'Le style Sornay' was recognizable for its use of brass nails.
